Farm Conservation & Preservation:
   
 

The following links are intended to provide farm owners with additional information relating to the conservation and preservation of the buildings and land that comprise their farms. Farms help to define our sense of cultural heritage in New Hampshire and are among the state’s most important assets.

   
 

State, Federal & Nonprofit Farmland Conservation Organizations:

  • State Conservation Committee (RSA 432:8-17)—To support the technical services for landowners provided by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service the state has established in each county a conservation district administered by a board of supervisors and open to all individuals and entities owning and managing land resources. Coordinating efforts of these districts is the State Conservation Committee composed of state and federal agency representatives and five public members appointed by the governor and council; it is attached administratively to the Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food.
  • NH Fish and Game Department –is the guardian of the state’s fish, wildlife and marine resources. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department works in partnership with the public to conserve, manage & protect these resources and their habitats; inform and educate the public about these resources; and provide the public with opportunities to use and appreciate these resources.
  • NH Department of Resources and Economic Development was established by the General Court of New Hampshire under Chapter 223 of the laws of 1961 and consists of four divisions: Forest & Lands, Parks & Recreation, Travel & Tourism Development, and Economic Development.
  • University of NH Cooperative Extension – provides New Hampshire citizens with research-based education and information, enhancing their ability to make informed decisions that strengthen youth, families and communities, sustain natural resources, and improve the economy.
  • NH Association of Conservation Commissions – The Conservation Districts in NH assist towns, landowners, farmers, foresters, developers and others to properly plan and conserve the wise
  • Land & Community Heritage & Investment Program (LCHIP) – an independent state authority that makes matching grants to NH communities and non-profits to conserve and preserve New Hampshire’s most important natural, cultural and historic resources.
  • Mooseplate.com – channels funding for the conservation of our state’s cultural heritage through the sale of the “Moose Plate” license plates through 7 state agencies.
  • NH Farm Bureau Federation – Non-profit, volunteer-based general agricultural organization representing 2,200 NH farm families and their 3,800 supporters. Monitors agriculture and forestry legislative issues and offers numerous member benefit programs.
  • USDA Farm Service Agency – administers farm commodity and resource conservation programs dealing with nearly all facets of agriculture, including Farm Loan Programs, Conservation Reserve Program, and Loan Deficiency Payments. FSA also assists NRCS with Environmental Quality Incentives Program and Grasslands Reserve Program.
  • USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service – A federal agency working through NH’s local conservation districts provides technical and financial assistance through a partnership effort, let by NH’s conservation districts and includes natural resource conservation efforts related to soil and water erosion control, water quality, stream bank protection, wetlands restoration, farmland protection, forest land improvement, wildlife habitat restoration, flood control and soil and resource inventories.
  • NH Association of Conservation Districts – Coordinate and implement statewide natural resource programs and provide support to and a forum for county conservation districts.
    Resource Conservation & Development - a USDA supported partnership working with an RC&D Council, a locally directed non-profit, to create and implement projects that conserve and develop land, water and community resources. Comprised of the North Country RC&D and the Southern NH RC&D.
  • USDA Rural Development - Provides consultations, assistance and funding opportunities for, individuals and businesses located in rural communities.
  • Society for the Protection of NH Forests - Non-profit organization that was founded in 1901 to perpetuate the forests through land protection, education, advocacy and forestry.
  • American Farmland Trust - The mission of American Farmland Trust is to help farmers and ranchers protect their land, produce a healthier environment and build successful communities.
  • SPACE: New Hampshire's Current Use Coalition -Not-for-profit (501(c)4) coalition of natural resource conservation organizations, agricultural groups, recreational user groups, and concerned landowners and individuals.

State, Federal and Nonprofit Building Conservation/Preservation Organizations:

  • Barn Committee (website coming soon) – The NH Agricultural Structures Matching Grants Programs Committee (or Barn Committee) was established by HB 395 (Chapter 285, Laws of 1999), which became effective as RSA 227-C:27-227-C:32 in July 1999. The committee represents a wide contingency of agricultural, conservation and preservation interests and provides advocacy and technical assistance to barn owners. The Barn Committee is attached administratively to the NH Division of Historical Resources.
  • NH Division of Historical Resources – NH’s “State Historic Preservation Office” was established in 1974. The DHR works to preserve the historical, archeological, architectural, engineering, and cultural heritage of New Hampshire as they are among the most important environmental assets of the state.
  • New Hampshire Preservation Alliance – the statewide, nonprofit historic preservation organization offering resources for community leaders as well as old house and barn owners and enthusiasts.
